The avian flu is a virus that naturally occurs in birds, and can be highly contagious among the species. However, close contact with infected birds has resulted in some rare cases in which this virus was transmitted to humans. Since 2003, more than 100 human avian flu cases have been diagnosed, with more than half of those cases resulting in death. Possible symptoms of this disease in humans include fever, coughing, sore throat, eye infections, and viral pneumonia.
