Information on Avian Flu
Avian flu, as the name implies, is a viral infection that primarily occurs in birds. It is highly contagious among the species, but is not usually transmitted to humans. When infection in humans does occur, it is often the result of close contact with infected poultry. Human-to-human transmission is extremely rare.
Symptoms of avian flu are similar to those seen with influenza in humans -- namely, sore throat, fever, and cough. They can range from mild to severe and life-threatening. Treatment involves medications, and research is currently exploring a possible vaccine.
