Symmetrel and Breastfeeding
Women who are taking Symmetrel (amantadine) and breastfeeding should know that the drug does pass through breast milk and may cause serious side effects in your nursing infant. Due to these potentially serious side effects, the manufacturer advises that women avoid the drug while breastfeeding. Symmetrel may also decrease the supply of your breast milk.
Is Symmetrel Safe During Breastfeeding?
Symmetrel® (amantadine hydrochloride) does pass through breast milk in women. Because of the serious side effects that could potentially occur in a nursing infant, the manufacturer recommends that women avoid this drug while breastfeeding. Symmetrel passes through breast milk in humans. It can cause some serious side effects in adults, as well as children, and it is assumed that these same Symmetrel side effects might occur in a breastfed infant. Also, the drug may, theoretically, decrease the supply of your breast milk.
