Yellow Fever Symptoms

The signs and symptoms of yellow fever can vary from person to person. In mild cases, some people have no symptoms, while others may have a fever, bloody nose, and a slow heartbeat. In more severe cases, symptoms can appear in three stages. Stage 1 usually includes things like a high fever, vomiting, and neck and back pain. In Stage 2 the fever can end and some people recover entirely. Those who progress to Stage 3 will see their fever return and may experience jaundice, organ failure, or even death.

 

Signs and Symptoms of Yellow Fever: An Overview

When a person becomes infected with the yellow fever virus, the virus begins to multiply. After three to six days, the symptoms of yellow fever can begin to appear. The period between becoming infected with virus and the appearance of symptoms is called the incubation period.
 
The symptoms of this disease can differ from one person to the next. Some people will have no symptoms, others may develop flu-like symptoms, and others may develop very serious yellow fever symptoms, including death.
 

Mild Yellow Fever Symptoms

People who develop mild symptoms of yellow fever may experience:
 
  • Fever
  • Headache
  • Bloody nose
  • Nausea
  • Slow heartbeat.
     
In mild cases of yellow fever, symptoms usually last one to three days.
